The Society is an active Member of the Alliance, along with the two other Park Societies in Wales and other bodies interested in supporting, preserving and promoting National Parks and other designated landscapes (for example AONBs) in Wales. This is an important part of the Society's work to ensure that the beauty of these areas is preserved for future generations to enjoy.
The Society works closely with the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority on a number of projects and initiatives. As well as planning applications, it liaises with the Public Rights of Way Officers on issues relating to footpaths, bridleways and countryside access and other matters which relate to the well-being of the National Park.
Fforest Fawr UNESCO Global Geopark is set within the Brecon Beacons National Park in south Wales. It comprises the western half of the National Park, stretching from Llandovery in the north to the edge of Merthyr Tydfil in the south, from Llandeilo in the west to Brecon in the east. The Society is an active member of the Management Committee of the Geopark and participates in the annual Geopark Festival.
The Society monitors all planning applications in the National Park and comments on those that we feel sufficiently important and which might affect the special qualities of the area to their detriment. If you have a concern about a proposed development, please contact us.
The Society led the initiative, along with the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and the University of Glamorgan to create Wales’ first International Dark Skies Reserve – and only the fifth such Reserve in the World!
